Beauty, Truth and Art

Art is often defined as the expression of beauty and truth. The various forms of arts and crafts that the world enjoys today — be it body painting or sculpting, burlesque theatre or video art, graffiti or mosaic — can only have begun with the first humans’ awe of nature. Indeed, a beautiful earth must have been the inspiration of many artists all over the world throughout the centuries, followed by the subtle forms and sensual mysteries of the human figure. This can be seen in paintings like Van Gogh’s starry starry night or in Michelangelo’s Pieta. They, just like other artists of their league and other unsung creative masters, only needed a starlit landscape and the human body to create masterpieces that the world would come to revere decades and centuries later.

Art is not relegated to visuals, though. Beauty and truth long to be expressed in literature with its ironies and rhymes; in music with shifting rhythms and notes. Through all their forms, arts and crafts provide insight into social realities and avenues for soul-seeking. They also lend opportunities for relaxation and entertainment to their viewers or listeners. They express the beauty that we so much long to preserve and reproduce, while giving us a view into the truth that many have always believed to be incomprehensible and elusive.
