Ikebana

Ikebana is the Japanese term for “arranged flowers” (ikeru, to arrange and hana, flower).  It is the Japanese art of formal flower arrangement which gives special regard to harmony, balance and form. Ikebana was first introduced in the 6th century by Chinese Buddhist missionaries who initiated the ritual of offering flowers to Buddha.

Perfect Little Stitches

The art of ikebana is centred on the formation of flower arrangement based on harmony of simple linear construction and the simple appreciation of the beauty of flowers and natural materials like branches and stems.  Typically, balance and harmony are the main elements of the ikebana flower arrangement.  It depicts heaven, earth and man.  In the old Japanese culture, the ikebana is considered spiritual and philosophical in nature, however, in the modern Japan, the act of arranging the ikebana is practised as a sign of sophistication and refinement among young Japanese women.
